Column Installation in theSRI Model 8610 and
Model 310GasChromatographs
equippedwith the on-column injector
SRI GasChromatographs are designed
tousebothpackedand capillary col-
umns. TheModel 8610has anoven
whichallows for columns coiledona
7” (17.5 cm ) diameter or smaller, while
theModel 310GC ( whichhas a smaller
oven ) can fit columns coiledona5” di-
ameter or smaller. The column installa-
tionprocedure is identical oneitherGC
sincebothGCs use the same injector
anddetector hardware. Only theoven
size isdifferent.
Themost common type of column used
withSRI GCs is theMXT type. This is a
fusedsilica linedstainlesssteel capillary
columnwhich is verydurableandeasy
touse. It is available inmany different
coil diameters, lengthsand tubingdi-
ameters. SRI typically suggests using
the .53mm internal diameter tubing size
( sometimes calleda “megabore” or
“widebore” capillary column. Wenor-
mally have the columns coiled toa
3.5” ( 9cm ) diameter so they fit easily in
either the8610Cor 310 columnoven.
