ThePID isused to identify targetVPHanalytes, definedasben-
zene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
m
-xylene,
p
-xylene,
o
-xylene, naph-
thalene, andmethyl-
tert
-butyl-ether.TheVPHmethod identifies
all of thearomaticcompounds after
o
-xylene tonaphthalene.The
reason for thedistinctionof aromatic fromaliphaticcompounds
restsoncurrent data,which suggests aromaticcompounds are
more toxic.
TheFIDdetector isusedonly for reportingaliphaticcompounds.
Thisdetector responds toall hydrocarbons, therebynecessitating
the subtractionof aromaticand target compounds. The latter
analytes subsequentlyare reportedon thePIDdetector.Thereare
twoaliphatic ranges:C5 toC8,whichelute from
n
-pentane to just
before
n
-nonane; andC9 toC12,whichelute from
n
-nonane to
just beforenaphthalene.

RunningMAVPHmethod requires calibrating13 separate com-
pounds.These13compoundsallow for thedeterminationof three
groupsof analytes in the sample: total gasoline, aliphaticandaro-
matichydrocarbons, and individual target compounds.Restekof-
fers the requiredmixtureswith aCertificate ofAnalysis orwith
complete data packs that canbeused for audits and internal qual-
ity assurance.TheVPHmixtures aremade in theappropriatecon-
centrations for spiking, ensuringaccurate identificationand
quantitationof environmental samples inyour laboratory.Restek
alsooffershighconcentrationmixes that canbediluteddown toa
spikingconcentration, useful for cost savings.
