Triazineherbicides have risen inusagedue to their lower toxicity
and less persistance in the environment as compared to the
chlorophenoxyherbicides (USEnvironmentalProtectionAgency
Method8151). TheUSEPAMethod619 is a test commonly
performedbyenvironmental laboratories for theanalysisof
triazineherbicides inwastewater.Although thismethodwas
written for usewithpackedcolumns, capillarycolumnshaveall
but replaced them inmodern laboratoriesperforming thismethod.

Table I
CompoundsDetermined byUSEPAMethod 619
Evenwhenusing capillary columns, separationof the 11 target
compounds listed inMethod619 canbedifficult due to their
similar structures. Most common capillary column stationary
phases donot have adequate selectivity to resolve these com-
pounds, and a confirmation columnof different selectivity canbe
difficult to find.
Restek specificallydesigned theRtx
®
-CLPesticides andRtx
®
-
CLPesticides2 columns for the analysis of theorganochlorine
pesticides.These stationaryphases arehighly selective for
compounds that containelectronegative substituents and,
correspondingly, workwell for the analysis of chlorophenoxy
herbicides, PCBs, and the analytes listed inUSEPAMethod619
(Table1).

theprimary and confirmation analysis is performedunder the
same conditions, at the same time, using a single injectionport.
The combinationof theRtx

CLPesticides2 columns resolves all target compounds in less
