Conclusion
The analysis of food contact packaging is an important part of
any food safety program. This is especially truewith thewide
variety of packagingmaterials available, the large range of
intended use conditions, and the increasing popularity of con-
venience foods. With a continuing consumer emphasis on
“speed tomouth,” foods often are heatedwithin the packaging
material. This application note discusses an optimized proce-
dure formonitoring common volatiles from food contact pack-
aging using purge and trapGC/MS and anRtx
®
-5MS capillary
column. TheRtx
®
-5MS column is an excellent choice for this
application. With its high stability and low bleed profile, it can
be used to screen for awide range of compounds byGC/MS.
