ASTMMethodD-6352 is a gas chromatography (GC) method
developed for the determination of petroleum distillates with a
boiling point range of 174
°
C to 700
°
C. Often referred to as
"high-temperature simulated distillation," thismethod requires
a capillary column capable of withstandingGC oven tempera-
tures up to 430
°
C. This presentsmany challenges for analysts
becausemost capillary columns aremanufactured using poly-
imide-coated fused silica tubing.At temperatures above 380
°
C,
even the best polyimide coating becomes brittle, which leads
to very short column lifetimes. In addition, themethyl silicone
stationary phase recommended in themethod alsomust sur-
vive these high temperatures.

available as in a 5m, 0.53mm ID, 0.1µm film dimension to
conform to the requirements of thismethod. It exceeds the res-
olution, peak shape, and bleed criteria for hydrocarbons rang-
ing up toC-110. Because theMXT
®
-1HTSimDist column is
coatedwith a 100% dimethyl polysiloxane polymer, it will
give the correct retention time/boiling point curve. TheMXT
®
-
1HTSimDist column exhibits low bleed and excellent inert-
ness, and the rugged Silcosteel
®
tubingwill hold up to temper-
atures in excess of 430°C.
To demonstrate the lower bleed and improved peak shape of
this innovative column, a Polywax
®
1000 referencematerial
was analyzed using aMXT
®
-1HTSimDist column and two
other columns that are commonly used for this application
(Figure 1)
. TheMXT
®
-1HTSimDist column exhibits lower
bleed and improved peak symmetry compared to competitor
columns.
