APPLICATIONNOTE
XXAn independent study conductedby amajor pharmaceutical
company indicated LC-MS chromatographicperformance
couldbe improved in some cases by switching thepost-column
transfer line from fused silica toPEEKpolymer tubing. The switch
dramatically reducedpeak tailing andeliminated thedegradation
of peak symmetry as injection volumewas reduced. Formore

XXTo straightenPEEKpolymer tubing, first choose apieceof
stainless steel tubingwith an inner diameter slightly larger than
theODof your tubing andwith an appropriate length for thePEEK
tubing youwish to straighten. For instance, for 1/16”ODPEEK
tubingwith a lengthof 10”, chooseour U-825 tubing (stainless
steel, 1/8”OD x 0.080” ID x 25 cm long, page 64). Slip your PEEK
tubing into the stainless steel tubing. Place this “sleeved” tubing
into anoven andbake at 425 ºF (218 ºC) for 30minutes or 350 ºF
(177 ºC) for 60minutes. Allow the sleeved tubing to return to room
temperaturenaturally (i.e., donot quench it withwater).Once
cooled, remove thePEEK tubing from the stainless steel sleeve
and inspect it for straightness. If needed, repeat theprocess until
thedesired straightness is achieved.
NOTE
Because the thru-holeof our 25µm IDPEEK tubing is very small, it
ispossible for somefittings tocause the ID tobecomeoccluded.
