APPLICATIONNOTE
BackPressureConsiderations
TheMicro-Splitter Valvesaredesigned toworkwhenbotheffluent flow
pathpressuresarenearly identical.However, the split flowpathwill often
havehigherbackpressure than thewasteflowpath,making it hard to
achieveany split flowat all. Thereare twopossible solutions. Placea
backpressure regulator (seepages152–153) on thewasteflowpath that
isequal toor slightlygreater than thepressureon the split flowpath.
Or, switch the twoeffluentpathways such that the split flowpathway is
attached to the“waste”port on the valveand thewasteflowpathway
isattached to the“split”port on the valve.

methodmay result ina lossof adjustment sensitivity.)
Prime/PurgeValve
Airwithin thepumpheadcancausenoisypumpoperationandflow
instability. Solve thisproblembyplacingaHighPressureMicro-Splitter
Valve (page146) inlinebetween thepumpand the injector valve. Youcan
then safelydivertpumpflow toawastecontainer at a sufficient rate to
dislodge theair. Removeair from the solvent line leading to thepump
withaPrime/PurgeValve (page155).
Multi-ColumnandDetector Systems
Does yourwork requireanalyseswithmultiplecolumnsanddetectors
that use the samemobilephase? If so, install oneof ourHighPressure
Micro-Splitter Valvesafter your injector.A single injectioncan thenbe
split to two separatecolumnsanddetector systems, at twodifferent flow
rates. Thiseconomical set-upeliminates theneed for anadditional pump
and injector valve,whileallowingdata tobeobtained simultaneously.
Post-Detector Interfacing
UseaStandardMicro-Splitter Valve to routefluidexitingan initial
detector tootherdevices, suchasamass spectrometer anda fraction
collector. The valvewill split and reduce theflow rate to that required for
MS interfacing,whilediverting the remainder of theflow to thecollector
(abackpressure regulatormayalsobe required for this set up, available
onpages152–153).
