TheCatalyticCombustionDetectorrespondstoallhydrocarbonswith
theselectivityofanFIDandthesensitivityofaTCD. Theentiredetector’s
diameterismerelyonecentimeter. Itssensorelementconsistsofatinycoil
ofplatinumwireembeddedinacatalyticceramicbead. EachCCDdetector
hasapairofsensorelements. Thesensorsarehousedinhigh-grade,flame-
proofnylon,andprotectivelycappedwithafinesteelmesh. In
SRIGCs, theCCD detector ismounted on thewall of the
ColumnOveninabrasshousing,asshowninthetopleftpicture.
TheanalyticalcolumnresidingintheColumnOvenisconnected
to thedetector through theovenwall; theexampleshownat
bottom left isanSRIGas-less

CCDdetectoranda1m(3’)Hayesep-Dpackedcolumn. The
CCDdetector isespeciallysuited forgas-
less operation because it can operate on
ambient air, requiring no high pressure
cylindergasessuchashydrogenorhelium. In theGCsystem
picturedat left,abuilt-inaircompressorsupplies thecarrier
gas for theCCD.
TheCCDdetectorcanalsobeusedasahydrocarbon
monitorinnon-chromatographicapplicationswheretheCCD
senses the totalhydrocarboncontentofaflowingairstream,
orasahydrogen/hydrocarbon leakdetector.
