Many analysts require natural gas analysis for BTU value
calculations or drilling and mudlogging applications.
Frequently, sulfur compounds are alsoof interest.
Because low sulfur concentrations (<50ppm) are dificult to measure, SRI has
enhanced our popular Multiple Gas Analyzer GCs to simultaneously monitor low
levelsofsulfurcompounds.Theadditionalhardware required isanFPD/FIDdetector,
which selectively detects sulfur down tomid-ppb range, and a room temperature
Silcosteel sample loop.
One reason sulfur is sodificult tomeasure is that it disappearsoncontactwithhot stainless steel surfaces;
even limited contact with a hot stainless steel sample loop will destroy any sulfur in the gas sample. Our
solution is to use a Silcosteel-lined transfer line leading to a splitter, and a 60 meter thick ilm capillary
column. While Telon columns are sometimes also used for sulfur analysis, the natural gas analysis (using
MoleSieve and SilicaGel) requires column temperatures of 250°C or higher. Since the sulfur column is
located in the same column oven, it is essential to use a column like the 60 meter capillary which can
tolerate the higher temperatures.
