The SRI 8610C Gas Chromatograph Multiple Gas #3 GC coniguration is a versatile low cost way of
analyzingmanydifferent kindsof gas samples. TheMG#3GCconiguration isalmost identical to theMG#1
GCconigurationexcept there isanadditional solenoidvalvewhichwhenactivatedby thePeakSimpledata
system stops the low of carrier gas in column 1. TheMG#3GC coniguration is slightlymore lexible than
theMG#1because thestoplowcapabilityallowsawider selectionof columns tobeused,where theMG#1
onlyworkswith silica gel asColumn 1 andMoleSieve 13X asColumn 2.

Thechromatogramsshownaboveareamixofnaturalgasandsulfurcompounds.Thechromatogram
shows the FPD response (black) overlaidwith the FID response (red). You can see by the overlaid
chromatograms that COS co-eluteswithPropanequenching its FPD response.
Instead, the MG#3 allows the Stop Flow solenoid to actuate at 3.5 minutes just after the Propane and
COSmigrate intoColumn 2. This traps the peaks after Propane inColumn 1while the peaks inColumn 2
(Methane, Ethane, Propane, H
2
S andCOS) separate and elute. Unlike column 1which does not separate
COSandPropane, thepeaksarewell separatedonColumn2 soquenchingdoesnot occur.OncePropane
elutes fromColumn 2 (about 10 minutes) the valve rotates back to the Load position and the Stop Flow
solenoid isde-energized. Thepeakswhichwere trappedoncolumn1nowelute to thedetectors (Butanes,
Pentanes,Mercaptans etc.)
