slightly thicker than the frit disc, providing enhanced sealing and
excellent chemical resistance. PCTFE surrounded PEEK frits can
be used up to 80 ºC, and PEEK frits alone are a good choice for
applicationsup to100 ºC.

APPLICATIONNOTE
FritVolume
The term“frit volume” refers to the volumeof the variousfluidpathways
that comprise thematrixof a frit.A standard frit isamassof small
particles fused together throughacontrolledprocessof compression
andheat. Becauseof their shape, therearegapsbetween the fused
particles. Fluidmakes itsway through thesegaps, creatingapathway
fromone sideof the frit to theother (see thediagram, below,where the
whitecircles represent fritparticles, and theblackarea represents the
voidbetween theparticles.)
Generally,when the fritparticles increase in size, the frit’sporosity
increasesaswell. The larger theparticles, the larger thegapsbetween
particles.Cumulatively, thesegaps comprisewhat is knownas“frit
volume.”Usinggravimetricdetermination, it hasbeenexperimentally
shown that the total volumeof anygiven fritmay range from18%–30%,
dependingupon theporosityof the frit.
Frit volume is calculatedbydeterminingwhat themassof the fritwould
be if itwerea solidblockofmaterial of equal size. Then the solidmass
of the frit ismultipliedby thepercentageassigned to theporosity to
determine the theoretical frit volume.

Fromachromatographicperspective, it’s important toknow the volume
of the frit used in your system. It ispossible for a frit tonegatively impact
your chromatography if the total frit volume is too largeand if it isplaced
inanarea throughwhich the samplewill pass. Toavoid frit-related
problems likebandbroadeningand lossof resolution,most inlinefilters
placedafter the sample introductionpoint (e.g., between the injection
valveand thecolumn) are smaller in sizeandporosity than inlinefilters
that areplaced inareasbefore the sample is introduced into theflow
path (e.g., between thepumpand the injection valve).
