Thehigh-performanceguardprotects columns in twoways. First, it
acts as afilter, trappingparticles in the frits. Second, when theguard
cartridge is packedwith the samematerial as the prep column, it
removescompounds that irreversiblyadsorb to thepackingmaterial.
