Model 8640 20-Vial Integrated Liquid Autosampler
General Operating Procedures
1. Filleach2mLvialat least75%fullwith liquidsample. Close thevialsso that theyarevapor-tight,with the
Teflonsideof thevialseptafacingdownward into thevial.
2. Thesample tray is insertedandremovedfrom the8640 inonedirectiononly. Toremove thesamplevial
tray,push itawayfromyou, toward thebackof theGC,until it isfreeof theautosamplerassembly. Place the
filledsamplevials in the tray. Reinsert thesample tray into the8640assemblyfrom thefront. Push itgently
toward thebackof theGCuntil thewhite linesat the tipof thewhitearrowon thesample trayarealignedwith
thefrontedgeof the8640. Thesample tray is then in thereadyposition,withvialnumberone inplaceunder
thesampleprobe. Thesample trayshownbelow, right isalmost in thereadyposition(itwas leftpartiallyout
forvisibilityofthelinesandarrow).
3. Activateandheat theGCdetector(s).
4. Loadorcreateacolumnoven temperatureprogram.
5. Loadorcreateanevent table. Version2.74 (andhigher)of thePeakSimplesoftware includesanevent
tablefilecalled“8640as.evt”asageneralevent tableforusewith the8640autosampler. Whenyou load this
eventfile, thedefaultrelaydescriptionswillnotmatch theactual8640autosamplerrelaydescriptions. These
autosampler-specificdescriptionsmustbeenteredbyyou, theuser. Therelaysassigned to theautosampler
areasfollows:
RelayA -moves thesampleprobeDOWN
RelayB -moves thesampleprobeUP.
RelayC-moves thesyringecarriageFORWARD
RelayD-INJECTS thecontentsof thesyringe
RelayE-ADVANCES the trayoneposition
RelayF-PRESSURIZES thesamplevial

appropriatedescriptions. The8640 relay
descriptionsarealso labeledon the right-
handsideof theGC.
6. Set theautosamplerairornitrogen tank
to60psi. Setthecarriergasto10mL/minute
(theequivalentpsisettingforyourmachine
islabeledontherightpaneloftheGC). The
amountofsampleused to flush theneedle
canbeadjustedbyvarying thepressureof
thegasused to force the sample from the
vial. Thisgaspressure isadjustedwith the
EPC trimpot on the top edgeof theGC’s
frontcontrolpanel, locateddirectlyabove
thevertical label“VIALPRESSURE”on
thefrontcontrolpanel. Usingtheeventtable
at right,youshouldcount25dropsduring
thetimethatthegasispressurizingthesample
(0.600minutes).
7. The injectionvolume is factorysetat1µL,but isadjustable to0-3µL. Loosen the2hex-head locknuts,
thenturntheknurlednutwhileobservingtheneedleinthesyringebarreltoachievethedesiredinjectionvolume
(pleasesee thepictureon the
Changing theNeedle
page to locate the locknutsandknurlednut).
