Explosive analysis byGCworks best when using veryhigh carrier gas
flows.
While low-boiling compounds (e.g., nitrotoluenes) could be
analyzedwell at normal carrier gas flowrates, the highboiling
compounds (e.g., HMX) are best analyzedwith carrier gas flowrates
five to seven times the normal linear velocity.

Most laboratorieswill find a columnhead pressure of 2 to 3psi is
optimumfor this analysis.
This should provide a linear velocityof 100
to 140 cm/second, or a flowof 12 –17ml/min..
