Results
Regarding the content of theOmega-3 andOmega-6 essential
fatty acids in the four oils studied, all containLA (18:2n6)
(
Figures 1-4andTable I
). Eveningprimrose oil (
Figure1
)
contains the largest amount of LA andwouldbe the best source.
Flax seedoil (
Figure 2
) reveals a significant amount of LNA
(C18:3n3), andwouldbe the best source of thisEFA.Onlyblack
currant seedoil (
Figure 3)
contains an approximately equal
amount of both isomeric linolenic acids. All chromatograms,
except that of flax seedoil, illustrate the presence ofGLA
(C18:3n6). In fact, borage oil (
Figure4
) andblack currant seed
oil are significant sources ofGLA.
Conclusion
Omega-3 (n-3) andOmega-6 (n-6)EFAs performkey functions
inour bodies.Quantifying these compounds innutritional
supplements such as eveningprimrose oil, flax seedoil, black
currant seedoil, andborage oil is successfully achievedusing the
FAMEWAX
™
column. This columnoffers excellent efficiency
and selectivity towards thesepolyunsaturatedmethyl esters,
providing an accuratedeterminationof the fatty acidprofiles.
Thus theFAMEWAX
™
column is an excellent column choice for
this and similar applications.
