*Fumaric acid is a trace impurity inmalic acid, aswell as an added component
of themix. The amount of fumaric acid inmalic acidwill not affect the stated
concentration of malic acid, but can represent a significant and variable devia-
tion from the low concentration of fumaric acid stated to be in themix. All other
components of themix are at the specified concentration.

Themeasurementof organicacids, eitherbyadsorptionandelu-
tion from a chromatographic column or by distillation, can be
used as a control test for anaerobic digestion. The chromato-
graphic separation method is presented for organic acids
(5560B), while amethodusing distillation (5560C) is presented
for volatile acids. A newmethod using gas chromatography is
included for the determination of acetic, propionic, butyric,
isobutyric, valeric, and isovaleric acids (5560D).

TheFragranceMaterialsAssociation (FMA)hasproposedamethod
for analyzing essential oils on polar and nonpolar capillary GC
columns.Aperformanceevaluationmixtureshouldbeused toaid in
detecting inlet problems, stationaryphasedegradation, loss of reso-
lution, changes in sensitivity, and thepresenceof reactive sites in the
sample pathway. Our test mix is consistent with the mixture pro-
posedby the FMA.The required 5% test solution ismade bydilut-
ing the 0.5mLof neatmixture to 10mLwith acetone. Theworking
solution will be stable for up to one week if transferred to a dark
container and stored refrigerated.
