hydrocarbons was separated with an
Educational FID GC to produce this
chromatogram. The FID response is
linearand reproducible. Stable fromday
to day, the FID is not susceptible to
contamination from dirty samples or
columnbleed. TheFID is thepreferred
detector for general hydrocarbon
analysis.

This chromatogram is from a direct
injectionof0.5mLofhumanbreath. The
longerweholdourbreath, thehigher the
CO

content. This was the result of a
class experiment called “Waiting to
Exhale,”which is included in themanual.
It is a contest to seewho can blow the

. Participants merely exhale
intoa3mLsyringe, then inject0.5mL into

This chromatogram from a

Educational GC was
obtainedusingair from thebuilt-inair
compressor as carrier gas and a direct
injection of 1µL 1000ppmMethanol in
Acetonemix. Students can clearly see
the Methanol and Acetone component
peaks, aswell asanegativewaterpeak
at the beginning of the run. Sample
standards are available, but similar
results may be obtained by running a
finger nail polish remover sample—
cheapand readilyavailable!
