In 1992 theWisconsinDepartment of Natural Resources (WDNR) published its technical
guidance in assessing and closing underground storage tanks (UST). In accordance with
Wisconsin state law and applicableUSEnvironmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) UST site
assessment requirements, WDNR requires site assessment to determine if a release has
occurred from aUSTSystem. In the technical guidance,WDNR released the first versions
of modified gasoline range organic (GRO) and diesel range organic (DRO) methods. In
September 1995, WDNR approved the modified GRO and DRO methods. These two
methods, knownasWisconsinGROandDRO, havebeenused invarious laboratories since
1996; they are popular analytical procedures, not only in the State ofWisconsin but also
inmany other states.
The GRO method is based on purge and trap GC/FID/PID analysis and is designed to
measure the concentration of GROs (C6-C10) and petroleum volatile organic compounds
(PVOCs) inwater or soil. TheDROmethod is based on solvent extractionGC/FID and is
designed tomeasure the concentration of diesel range organics (C10-C28) in water, soil,
or waste. DRO also can be used tomeasure kerosene, motor oil, or lubricant oil.
