• How is theUltraAqueousC18 columndifferent from traditionalC18 columns?
TheUltraAqueousC18 columnhas a trueC18 alkyl linkage to ahigh-surface-area
TypeB silica support. This is different from traditionalC18phases becauseRestek
uses anovel bondingprocess that results in apolar group attached to the silica
surface. It is this secondaryprocesswith thepolar functional groups thatmakes the
UltraAqueousC18 columnunique and allows it tobeused inhighly aqueousmobile
phases.
• How isRestek’sUltraAqueousC18 columndifferent fromother brands of
highlyaqueous stationaryphases?
There are several approaches todesigning aqueous stationaryphases. Someof the
older types of highly aqueous stationaryphases used a low-densitybondingof the
C18 ligand, unintentionally leaving exposed silanol sites. These silanol sites helped
to create ahydrophilic surface that kept the alkyl chains suspended.However, the
very reactive silanol sites could cause severepeak tailingof basic analytes.Another
avenuemanufacturers have taken is to cross-link theC18 chains, creating aphysical
hindrance thatwouldprevent the alkyl chains from collapse. This process has been
successful, but creates problems in trying toperform a secondary end-cappingproce-
dure, somany reactive silanol sitesmay remain. TheRestekprocess successfully
achieves secondarypolar end-capping that provides ahydrophilic environment that
prevents thehydrophobic alkyl chain from folding.
