We havemeasuredphysical characteristics and
metals content for a varietyof silicas and
chromatographically compared their relative levels
of base deactivation after bondingmonomeric
alkyl stationaryphases to them. Some aggressive
base deactivationprocedures significantly altered
the characteristics of the silica, particularlypore
size and surface area. Some base deactivated
silica canprovide superior chromatography for
peak shape over typeBmaterials. This study
attempts to correlate the physical and chemical
properties of different silica varietieswith their
level of base deactivation.
