PAHReactions in thePresence of
Hexachlorocycopentadiene and
Hexachlorobutadiene
PAHs have been known to spontaneouslychlorinate in the presence
hexachorocyclopentadiene andhexachlorobutadiene.
The reaction is a
substitution reactionwith chlorine for hydrogen on thePAH.
The exact
mechanismhas not been determined at this time.
No loss of
hexachlorocyclopentadiene nor hexachlorobutadiene is seen in this reaction.
The reaction is believed tobe caused by free chlorine or chlorine radicals in
certain lots of hexachlorocyclopentadiene and hexachlorobutadiene.
Purificationof hexachlorocyclopentadiene and hexachlorobutadiene by
distillationprevents this reaction.
