Standardflanged tubeendfittings 1/4-28
Thebasiccomponentof theCheminert system is thepolypropylenenut,
retainedonPTFEor FEP tubingbyaflange formedwithaCheminertflanging
tool (page70). This isanexcellentmethod for connectingfluorocarbon tubing,
as there isno reductionof the insidediameter andnobindingor twistingof the
tubingwhen thefitting is tightened. Amatingof theparts isachievedwithzero
deadvolume,making thisan ideal fitting forbiological systems.
Cheminert tubeendfittings come in twelvedifferent colors for systemcolor
coding,andareavailable for 1/16"or 1/8"ODfluorocarbon tubing. (While in
theoryotherpolymers couldbemolded to formaflange,onlyfluorocarbons
suchasPTFEor FEPhave low-temperaturemalleabilityandgood form retention
atoperating temperatures.) Tubeendfittingsattachdirectly toCheminert valves
andfittings,andareeasily joined toeachotherwithaunion. Tighteningbyhand
isall that is required tomakea leak-free seal at 500psi liquid,although for long
term reliabilityawrenchcouldbeused toapplyanadditional 1/8 turn.
