-5SilMS columns are especiallywell suited for
Method625. Extracts of environmental samples ana-
lyzedusing thismethod commonly containhigh
molecularweight contaminants, andhighbake-out
temperatures are needed to remove these from the
column. TheRtx
®
-5SilMS stationary phase and the
proprietary deactivationused toprepare these
columns can reliablywithstand sustained tempera-
tures of 330ºC, andwill not exhibit the activity that
often is causedby subjecting a column to these con-
ditions. Analysts usingRtx
®
-5SilMS columns can
program their GCs to350ºC for especially persistent
contamination. Figure 1 shows Restek analytical ref-
erencematerials analyzedon anRtx
®
-5SilMS col-
umnprogrammed to330ºC. Bleed is negligible, rela-
tive to the 10ng on-column concentrationof the tar-
get analytes, such as benzo(ghi)perylene.
Toobtain Figure 1, conditionswere optimized to
achieve the fastest analysiswithout sacrificing resolu-
tionof analytes that share quantification ions, such as
benzo(b)fluoranthene andbenzo(k)fluoranthene
(peaks 55&56). Stepswere taken to focus N-
nitrosodimethylamine. Tominimize tailing, the
pulsed-splitless hold-timewas reduced to0.3min-
utes to reduce the time the analytes spend in the
injectionport. This step also sends a higher percent-
age of solvent to the split vent, allowing resolutionof
the amine from the solvent. The initial temperature,
35ºC, allows better analyte focus at the column inlet.
The pulsedpressurewas reduced from30psi to
20psi to allow even transfer of N-nitrosodimethy-
lamine to the column. Finally, the flow ratewas
reduced from1.1mL/min. to1.0mL/min. Analytes
present at higher concentrationswill exhibit less tail-
ing at the lower rate.

The silarylene stationary phase inRtx
®
-5Sil MS columns incorporates phenyl rings into the polymer backbone.
This improves thermal stability andmakes the phase less prone to oxidative degradation, significantly reducing
bleed. Rtx
®
-5Sil MS columns are ideal for usewithGC/MS systems, including ion trap systems. The 0.28mm ID
columns increase sample capacity, relative to 0.25mm ID columns, without significant loss in resolution. We
recommend them for environmental analyses.
