large GFs (1-1//2-2”ID ) we are recommending using a SL metal backing Ferrule (yours), L can be easily adjusted to suit > Now(2022+)as our Standard ! smaller(<<1.5”) ID GFs are still a one-piece design ! BUT ASK ! > Confirm ! Typical Tolerance L +/- 0.1mm OD +/-0.1 ID +0.05mm

Overall Length is an “easy” adjustment for Us !
NO Tooling Costs Apply for “Standard” Ferrules . . . > OR NON-Standard “negotiable” ! > with YOUR Fitting sample &/or DIMS provided > but depending on difficulty ! ie re >Wall Thickness & Length & as per our GF Spec Data Sheet !
Graphite Ferrules are UNIQUE
Soft > Malleable & squash into Shape > in-situ ! BUT STILL relatively FRAGILE > Handle with Care !
DISCLAIMER > over-ride Thread & Inner profile of NUT invariably results in extrusion of the Graphite into the threads etc > some applications the ferrules may be marginally COMPROMISED re compression Density !
ASK > for recommendations in these “extreme” situations !
NOT All DIMS are in fact feasible > a L and Wall Thickness compromise !
Custom Tooling : Small <1/2”ID $100; Large >1/2” - 1”ID; $175 1-2”$210 - IF required ? > ASK !
“some” Limitations > Size vs Wall thickness vs Length > ASK !
Graphite Ferrules are NOT machined as such \ but compressed in a “Die Set” !)
> Soft / Malleabe & CAN be squashed in-situ into shape ( but marginally ? > by a few “thous” w/o losing integrity )
BUT High Compression Moulding in a Tooling “Die Set” Extreme Pressures R used ( but Graphite is “elastic”) and the laminated format whilst a good compromise can still result in trace Air infusion / leaks under high vacuum (GC/MS Apps). This is minimised by high torque tightening in a “truly captured” fitting format ! In situ torque tightening The NUT > much higher compression ( straight GFs “properly captured )
Limit Overtightening breaking fragile tubes with an appropriate” Torque Wrench “ !
ALWAYS TRIAL TEST RE- SAFETY ! > & Can be highly APP DEPENDENT ! re temperature and Pressure > Graphite has a LOW co-eff of friction ! > re end Pressure ! RE Supporting extreme weights in a Vertical position > Tube may tend to “slide” > out ! > an EXTREME situation > TEST Safely . . . but Be-A-Ware !
NOTE :CHROMTECH is the ONLY known OEM WW of these Unique Large Graphite Ferrules ! even Swagelok ! > Not in THEIR Interest ? > Scope ! ie Just too Good ! . . . for some APPs ! > but “even”SS Ferrules Can Be “problematic” !
AND WE were the “prime” Inventor of GFs for Chromatogtaphy Use ! ( from > the ‘70s+ )& the source of Many OEM “copy-cats”since !
some APPS
General Purpose Ferrules -
Replaceable ( IE Nut & GF simply slides OFF! ), ( cost savings ! > eg for protypes & re-usable ! ) The GF actually “extrudes” into the thread of the Nut and can’t be easily removed intact ! > LOW Cost> re-Usable ! ( with Care ! ) compared to Metal(SS)
Reducing Ferrule Apps ( compared to expensive metal fittings )
HIgh Temperature APPS >1000C in inert atmosphere ( furnace tubes )
Gas Chromatography Columns, Inlet Liners
Glass / Ceramic ( Catalyst )Tubes > eg Gas Generators
HighTemp Spectra Cells “ Glass / Quartz { for eg IR, FTIR ( higher VOCs > ~C20 )
- where Size DIMs eg OD are far more critical to fit & seal ! NOT RECOMMENDED For High/Vacuum OR many GC/MS APPs > Use OK IFUpstream +ve Pressure and/or custom “Capture-Type” GF Fittings > ASK ! eg Fisons> CarloErba
In Fact
The UNIVERSAL Ferrule for many APPS SOFT & Malleable material NOT Amorphous ! NOT Fragile ! Except large Ferrules Handle with Care ! > certainly NOT like “Hard” “pencil-type” amorphous Graphite ! where normal metal Ferrules might be Useless ! in fact ? > & tend to break or distort glass, ceramic > metal tubing ! ( & fittings particularly IF / When Overtightened ! always use a Torque Wrench for these ! )
what’s-more ! with care the GFs can be reused ! > & the Nut & GF simply slides-off the tube ! Retain the GF inside the NUT as It extrudes into the Nut Thread trying to remove it will in fact destroy the GF ! > The “captured” GF inside the “nut” is Then re-useable ! with Care> & Many Times ? > a significant cost saving !
GFs do NOT require any metal “backing” ferrule ! . . . except for large sizes 1.5, 1.75, 2.0”ID where Your “existing” SL backing ferrule may be required > useful ! . . . ( and they use much less graphite for us & thus easier to make ! )
*Custom Tooling Cost > ( <12mm ID) $115 ) 12-25mm ID $175; 25-50mmID $220.00 ea perSet “once-off”charge if the size is NOT already an in-stock Melb item !
We will ask firm order(er)s to specify / verify the exact DIMs preferred and We THEN Supply OUR nearest “suitable” re OD /L /SL / ( & the Cone“Tip” strengthened > re fragility ! where necessary!
