SDvalves selectoneof 4 to16
dead-ended streams. The selected
streamflows from thevalveoutlet
toa samplevalve,pressure sensor,
detector,column,etc. The same
configurationmayalsobeused
todirectone stream toanumber
of outlets for applications suchas
fractioncollection.
Thisexample illustratesautomated
samplingof non-pressurized
containers.
Avacuumpump isused to
move sample from thecontainers
toa6port samplingvalve.
The
3port valve isused toblock the
vacuumflow through the sampling
valve toallow the samplewithin the
loop toequilibrateat atmospheric
pressure.
The6port valve is then
switched, injecting the sample. This
methodeliminatesanypossible
effect frompressuredifferences
among thecontainers,providing
accurateand repeatable results.
All threevalves canbeautomated
withairor electricactuators for
unattendedoperation.
TheSDflowpath isolates the
unselected sample streams,but
thepotential exists for extraneous
sampleor contaminants tobe in
the lineswhencontainersarefirst
connected. Toavoidproblems,
eitherprepurgeeach lineor allow
sufficient sampling time for the line
topurgeprior to injection.
