detector. ThePIDdetector responds tocompoundswhose ionizationpotential isbelow10.6eV, including
aromaticsandchlorinatedmoleculeswithdoublecarbonbonds. TheFIDdetectorrespondstothehydrocarbons
inthesample. TheDELCDselectivelydetectsthechlorinatedandbrominatedcompoundsintheFIDexhaust.
Since thesample ispre-combusted in theFID flame, theDELCD isprotected fromcontaminationdue to
hydrocarbonoverload. ThePID isblind tocertain
compoundswhichcancause interference,suchas
methanol,andisrecommendedbytheEPA. Peaks
on theFIDchromatogram thatareobscuredby
the methanol peak are visible on the PID
chromatogram. Benzene and carbon
tetrachloridearecommon target analytes
whichco-elute. TheFIDrespondstoboth.
ThePIDrespondsonlytobenzene,while
theDELCD responds only to carbon
tetrachloride.
