Resolution and analysis time are two critical factors to considerwhendeveloping an assay for ethanol andother volatiles in
biological samples.Wehave developed two stationaryphases specifically for blood alcohol analysis; eachhas the ability tobase-
line resolve all of the lowmolecularweight alcohols and theirmetabolites. Elutionorder of this analyte set differs on the two
stationaryphases, enabling screening and confirmationof volatile compounds tobe performedwithone injection.These
columns alsowere designed formaximum sample throughput,with total analysis timeunder 3.5minutes for an isothermal
run. In addition toblood alcohol analysis, these columns canbeused to testwhole blood, serum, or urine for volatile com-
pounds, using temperature programming.
