Whencomponentsof interesthave low
boilingpoints, thisplumbing schemeallows
“heavy”componentswith long retention
times tobebackflushed towaste. After the
sample loop is loaded inPositionA, thevalve
is switched toPositionB to inject the sample
ontocolumn1. As soonasall components
of interesthaveenteredcolumn2, thevalve
is switchedback toPositionA. Column1
isbackflushed toventduring theanalysis,
reducing the total analysis time.

Columns
InPositionA,samplefills the two loops
in series. InPositionB, the sample is
simultaneously injected into two separate
flow systems. A singleautosamplerused
with thisflowpathcanautomate two
analytical procedures for the same sample.
Inan importantnon-chromatographic
application, the rolesof carrier and sample
are reversed,permitting twodifferent
quantitiesof twodifferentmaterials tobe
dispensed together,as inautomaticdilution.

maybe identical orofdifferent sizes.
This technique replacesa4port sample
selector anda6port sample injector.
InPositionA,Loop2 is loadedwith
sample2while themobilephaseflows
throughLoop1andonto thecolumn.
InPositionB, theLoop2 sample is injected
onto thecolumnandLoop1 is loadedwith
sample1. When thevalve is returned to
PositionA, theLoop1 sample is injected
onto thecolumnandLoop2 is reloaded
with sample2.
