. ThePurge&Traphardware
consistsofa10portvalve inaheated,ductedvalveoven, two traps,acoolingfan,and thepurgehead(s). The
uniquedual trapdesignenables thesimultaneous trappingofcompoundswithdifferentboilingpoints. Each
traphas itsownheater,and theendsof the trapsareenclosed in thevalveovenducts topreventcoldspots.
Thecoolingfanmaintains theadsorption temperatureandrapidly lowers trapheatafterdesorption. The trap
in the lowerposition(TRAP1) isusuallypackedwithTenax
TM
-GRat thefactory,while theupper trap(TRAP
2) is leftemptyfor theuser topackwith thedesiredadsorbent. ACarbosieve
TM
packed trap isalsoshipped
with theGC foroptional installation in theTRAP2position.TheCarbosieve trap isusedonlywhen the
analysis includes lightgaseousVOC’s, themostcommonbeingvinylchloride.TheMethod5030Purge&
Trapisthestandardmodelwithafixedpurgeheadthatusesdisposable16mmtesttubesforambienttemperature
purging. There isabuilt-inseptumporton thispurgehead throughwhichgasstandardsmaybespiked. The
Method5030/5035Purge&Trap features interchangeablepurgeheads. The
5035purgehead isa thermostattedheaterbody(fromambient to50
o
C)which
accepts standard40mLVOAvials. Inside theheater bodyare twoneedles
whichpuncturetheseptum:thelongeronebubblesheliumpurgegasthroughthe
sample,while theshorterneedleexhaustssample-ladengas to theadsorbent
traps. IncompliancewithEPAMethod5035, thepurgehead ismechanically
agitatedwhilethesampleisbeingpurged. ThereisasyringeportontheMethod
5030/5035Purge&Trap thatallowswaterand internalstandard tobeadded to
thesample in thevialwithoutpuncturing theseptumagain. Operationof the
Purge&Trap isautomatedby thePeakSimpledatasystem.
