Technical tips forworkingwith solutions
containing decachlorobiphenyl:
Decachlorobiphenyl haspoor solubility inmost organic
solvents.Themaximumconcentration that canbeprepared in
acetone, hexane, or isooctane is200µg/mL.Temperaturewill
affect the solubilityaswell. Storing solutions at reduced
temperatureswill cause thedecachlorobiphenyl toprecipitate.
It’s crucial that theseproductsbe sonicated for aminimumof
15minutesprior toopening theampul.Becauseeachultra-
sonicbathoperates at different energy levels, the15minutes
must beusedas aguidelineonly. Longer sonication timewill
not affect theproduct quality.
It is important to remember this applies toworking solutions
prepared inyour laboratoryaswell.Theamount of compound
that precipitates isdependent uponconcentrationAND
temperature. If you storeyour standards at a temperature lower
than4°C (evendilute solutions), allowextra sonication time.
For best results, sonicate theampul before eachuse.
