A self-regulating sparging systemcanhelp reducehelium
consumptionand improvepumpperformance. Set thisupby
pressing your tubing through theappropriateholes in your bottle
capandattachingeach line toafilter. Sparge yourmobilephase
withan inert gas (preferablyhelium) for 15–20minutes. Then
reduce theoutlet pressureof the sparginggas toamaximumof 5
psi (0.34bar) and insert aplug (A-626orA-628) into the remaining
port of thecap. The sparginggaswill shut off once the incoming
pressureequals thepressure inside the reservoir. As themobile
phase is consumedand the internal pressure lowers, sparginggas
will enter tokeep the systempressurizedanddegassed. Please
Note: If gas leakswhilepressurizing thebottle, try removing the
sealing ring from thebottle, as it sometimes interfereswith the
sealingof thesebottlecaps.

One concernwith sparging systems is thepossibilityof solvent
backingup the sparging inlet line. This canoccur if thegas tank
completely evacuateswith the regulating valves open, creating
a vacuum in the tubing. Solvent backupmaydamage sparging
system components and cause cross-contaminationofmobile
phase reservoirs. Tohelpprevent solvent backup, install the
CV-3010 InlineCheckValve (page 151) along the tubing line that
runs between thegas supply and the solvent bottle.
